Mr. Green reporting live…

“Over the past couple of weeks many of our customers may have a sharp rise in prices and a somewhat drop in quality in the produce that we have been supplying . This phenomenon is not specific to us alone, it is regional and somewhat global. Previously most of the produce that you guys were enjoying were from our network of greenhouse farmers, those lovely colored sweet peppers, plump tomatoes, juicy English cucumbers and the list goes on. However with the recent drought and then heavy rainfall that we are experiencing these farmers have been seriously affected many were unable to even continue production.
Notwithstanding ,these farmers with a do or die attitude have been working diligently to get back into production and as such you may be able to enjoy their harvests in the coming weeks,so look out for it. However it is not only the greenhouse farmers that have been affected , heavy rainfall also has negative effects on field farmers.
You may noticed that certain crops such tomatoes, ochros and pimentos have increased in price drastically, these plants rely on heavy flowering to produce but with heavy rains the flowers are knocked off the plants by the downpour and as such are not producing in favorable quantities. Likewise, sweet peppers are vegetables that cannot tolerate a lot of water, you may have noticed that there has been what we refer to as “melting” in sweet peppers i.e. rotting at the stems and soft spots along the wall of the vegetable, this is due to high water content in the plant.

Even our neighbours up the islands,St. Vincent,Grenada have been affected by the drought. Yams, eddoes, sweet potatoes even dasheen have skyrocketed most noticeably ginger,a staple in Caribbean cooking. These items will probably maintain their prices until maybe mid October, early November when new fields are harvested.
Don’t be worried however the Earth has been good to us for so long and all she asks is that we be good to her. So please let us do our part to help prevent flooding and toxicity in our rivers and streams and we will be provided for but in the meantime we at MarketMovers will continually strive to source healthy foods  at good prices to you our loyal customers. Give thanks for the breath of life.”

    Dear MM HQ

Thanks for the info, I have been wondering what’s going on with the quality of the produce. Well it seems like there is not much we can do but wait it out.

Hopefully more people will seeing the connection between their actions (littering carelessly) and the consequences (higher price for poor quality)
